Paul and Sheryl Shard explore the exotic Eastern Mediterranean, a region riven with conflict. These immediately become apparent as an overnight sail from Turkey leads to some difficulties clearing into Cyprus. Once in Cyprus the plan to visit Northern Cyprus has to be conducted with some stealth due to tensions between the two territories. Visiting Syria, Lebanon and Israel on the next leg of their journey means more difficulties navigating their way from port to port; the Israeli authorities being particularly cautious in their welcome. Once in Israel the Shards see evidence of the tensions at first hand after coming across an Israeli military patrol that has just been ambushed. Despite the occasional drama though, the Shards find the region offers a warm reception to all visitors.
